Labuan Bajo town itself is walkable. The harbour, the main restaurant strip, and most hotels are within 10–15 minutes on foot. But if you want to explore the mainland of Flores — waterfalls, caves, villages, viewpoints — you will need wheels. Here is what is available.
Who This Is For
Visitors who want to get beyond the harbour and explore the area around Labuan Bajo without joining a group tour.
Walking
For the town itself, walking is easy and fine. The harbour promenade, the night market, the main restaurant strip on Jalan Soekarno Hatta, and most of the central hotels are all within walking distance of each other. Roads are hilly in parts but nothing extreme.
Scooter Rental
The most popular option for independent travellers. Scooters are available for rent throughout town for IDR 70,000–150,000 per day depending on the model and condition.
A valid home country driving licence and an International Driving Permit (IDP) are technically required. Rental shops will not always ask for the IDP, but if you are involved in an accident without one, it complicates everything significantly. Carry it.
Scooters open up the day trips — Cunca Wulang Waterfall, Batu Cermin Cave, and viewpoints around town are all reachable by scooter. The roads around Labuan Bajo town are paved and manageable. Longer routes toward Ruteng become more challenging.
Private Car with Driver
Hiring a car with a driver costs around IDR 500,000–1,000,000 per day. This is the most comfortable and flexible option for exploring further afield — Wae Rebo, Cunca Wulang, or day trips toward Ruteng. A driver who knows the roads well is worth every rupiah. Ask your hotel for a recommendation.
Ojek (Motorbike Taxi)
Short hops around town, or as a supplement when you need to get somewhere quickly without your own scooter. Fares are negotiated upfront — IDR 20,000–50,000 for most in-town trips. The Gojek and Grab apps work in Labuan Bajo with varying reliability.
Shared Minibuses (Bemos)
Bemos run fixed routes around Labuan Bajo and to nearby areas. Cheap and authentic but slow and not always reliable for timing. Not recommended if you have a schedule to keep.
Blue Bird Taxis
A small fleet of metered Blue Bird taxis operates in Labuan Bajo. More reliable than negotiated taxis for airport runs and short transfers. Book via the Blue Bird app.
Renting for the Whole Day
For day trips on the mainland, renting a scooter or hiring a driver for the full day makes the most sense. Hourly rates are inefficient for anything involving an hour or more of driving each way.
