Day Trips from Labuan Bajo on Land (That Are Not the Komodo Boat)

Written by the Casa de Capulet team

Most people come to Labuan Bajo for the islands and the dragons. But the mainland around town has its own attractions — and most visitors miss them entirely. Here are the best land-based day trips from Labuan Bajo, all reachable by scooter or private driver.

Who This Is For

Visitors who have done (or plan to do) a Komodo boat trip and want to explore the Flores mainland on their remaining days. Also good for travellers who prefer land activities to long days on the water.

Cunca Wulang Waterfall

About 30 km south of Labuan Bajo (roughly 1 hour by road). A limestone canyon with a series of swimming holes, rock slides, and cliff jumps. The hike into the canyon takes about 20 minutes each way on a clear path. You swim between the walls of the gorge to reach the deeper pools.

This is the standout mainland day trip. Most tourists skip it in favour of another boat day, which means you often have the canyon largely to yourself outside of weekends.

Entrance fee: IDR 20,000–25,000. Bring a waterproof bag, sandals with grip, and a towel. A guide is available on site.

Batu Cermin (Mirror Cave)

Only 4 km from the centre of Labuan Bajo. The cave gets its name from the limestone walls that glitter and reflect light like mirrors when sunlight enters through a natural opening. The interior is impressive — stalactites, narrow passages that require ducking and crawling, and the sparkling light effect that gives the cave its name.

Entry fee (2025–2026): approximately IDR 50,000 for foreigners. A guide is mandatory and included. Tour takes around 45–60 minutes. Wear covered shoes.

Rangko Cave

About 20 km from Labuan Bajo on the western Flores coastline. The cave sits on a small island a short distance from Rangko Village, reached by a 10-minute boat transfer from the village pier. Inside is a stunning underground lake with turquoise water. You can swim in it.

Best combined with Batu Cermin as a single day. Allow around 2–3 hours for the drive, boat, cave, and return. Bring a waterproof bag and swimming gear. No electricity inside the cave — it is lit by natural light through rock openings.

Sylvia Hill Viewpoint

A popular hilltop viewpoint about 12 km from Labuan Bajo with sweeping views over the harbour and the national park islands beyond. Easy to reach by scooter. Good for sunrise or late afternoon. A short walk from the car park to the top. Often combined with other day trip stops.

Weaving Villages

Traditional ikat weaving villages around Labuan Bajo offer a glimpse into Manggarai culture. Tenun weaving — hand-made textile work using traditional patterns — is sold in some villages. The weaving process is demonstrated on site. Ask your hotel to recommend a village worth visiting; quality and authenticity varies.

Tips for Mainland Day Trips

Most mainland attractions have minimal tourist infrastructure. Bring cash, water, snacks, and a basic first aid kit. If you are going by scooter, check road conditions after heavy rain. A private driver makes the logistics significantly easier for combination days.
