What to Pack for a Komodo Day Trip: The Complete Packing List

Written by the Casa de Capulet team

A Komodo day trip starts before the sun comes up and keeps you moving until late afternoon. What you bring makes a real difference to how you feel at the end of it. This is the complete list.

Who This Is For

Anyone preparing for a Komodo National Park day trip and wanting a single definitive packing list.

Sun and Heat Protection

This is the one area where most people under-prepare. You are on open water for several hours and hiking in direct sun. The consequences of getting it wrong are unpleasant.

  • Reef-safe sunscreen: standard chemical sunscreens damage coral. Use mineral-based SPF 30+ and reapply every two hours. Non-negotiable near reef areas.
  • Sun hat with a brim: a cap works for the hike but a full-brim hat is better on the boat deck.
  • Sunglasses with UV protection: the water glare is intense.
  • Rash guard or long-sleeve shirt: provides better protection than sunscreen alone and helps protect against jellyfish in the water.

Footwear: The Part People Get Wrong

You need two types of footwear for a Komodo day trip, and ideally both with you.

  • Closed shoes or trail sandals with grip: for the Padar Island hike and the dragon trek on Rinca or Komodo. Thongs are not appropriate and will not protect your feet.
  • Water sandals or reef shoes: for the beach and snorkelling entries over rocks. Barefoot snorkelling entries over coral rubble are uncomfortable at best and injurious at worst.

For the Water

Most day trips provide snorkel gear, but the fit is variable and well-used. Your own gear fits better and is more comfortable for the hours you spend in the water.

  • Snorkel mask and fins, if you have them
  • Towel that dries quickly
  • Waterproof bag or dry bag for phone and valuables
  • Underwater camera or GoPro with a wrist strap
  • 3mm wetsuit or rash guard for warmth on longer water sessions

For the Boat

The early departure is cold, particularly on open water before sunrise. Most people are caught off guard by this.

  • A light jacket or hoodie for the first hour on the water
  • Motion sickness tablets, take them before departure, not when you feel sick
  • Reusable water bottle, fill before you leave the hotel
  • Snacks in addition to the provided lunch, such as energy bars, nuts, or fruit
  • Small first aid kit: plasters, antiseptic wipe, paracetamol

Cash

Park fees are sometimes included in your day trip price and sometimes not. Confirm with your operator. If they are not included, you may need cash at the ranger posts on each island. Bring IDR 500,000 to IDR 1,000,000 in cash to be comfortable.

What to Leave at the Hotel

  • Passports and unnecessary valuables, the boat has no safe
  • Large backpacks, a small daypack is enough
  • Excessive jewellery, it gets lost in the water
  • White or bright clothing for the dragon trek, rangers recommend neutral colours

The Padar Island Hike Specifically

If your day trip includes the Padar Island sunrise hike, add a headtorch, knee support if you have any joint sensitivity, and make sure your camera is fully charged the night before since you will want a full battery for the summit views.

A note for Casa de Capulet guests

If you are missing anything before your trip, the team at Casa de Capulet may be able to lend you reef-safe sunscreen, a dry bag, or a light jacket. Ask on the morning you leave. For reception or general enquiries, please chat to us on WhatsApp or by email.

FAQs

What shoes should I wear on a Komodo day trip?

Bring two pairs: closed shoes or grip sandals for the Padar hike and dragon trek, and water sandals or reef shoes for beach and snorkel entries.

Is snorkel gear provided on Komodo day trips?

Yes, most operators include basic snorkel gear. Bringing your own mask and fins gives a better fit and more comfort.

What sunscreen should I use in Komodo National Park?

Reef-safe mineral sunscreen only. Standard chemical sunscreens damage coral. Look for non-nano zinc oxide or titanium dioxide formulations.

Do I need cash for Komodo National Park?

Yes. Park entry fees are sometimes paid in cash at ranger posts on each island. Bring IDR 500,000 to IDR 1,000,000 if fees are not included in your tour price.

Should I take motion sickness medication on a Komodo day trip?

If you are at all prone to motion sickness, yes. Take tablets before departure, not after you start feeling unwell. The open ocean crossing can be choppy, particularly on the afternoon return.

What should I wear for the Padar Island hike?

Closed shoes with grip, comfortable activewear or shorts, a rash guard, and a hat. A headtorch if hiking at sunrise.

Is a wetsuit necessary for snorkelling in Komodo?

Not strictly necessary. The water is usually 24 to 28°C. A 3mm wetsuit or rash guard gives useful protection against jellyfish and sun exposure.

What happens to my things while I am in the water?

Leave valuables in a dry bag on the boat. Most boats have a covered area and crew keep watch. Do not take irreplaceable items.
