The standard Indonesia Visa on Arrival gives you 30 days. If you want to stay longer — up to 60 days total — you can extend it once for a further 30 days. The extension must now be done in person at an immigration office. If you are based in Labuan Bajo, the process is manageable and the local office is well set up for tourists.
Who This Is For
Travellers on a Visa on Arrival or eVisa who want to extend their stay beyond 30 days.
What Changed in May 2025
Before May 2025, VOA extensions could be processed online. That option was removed. From May 29, 2025, all extensions must be done in person at an Indonesian immigration office. Plan accordingly — you cannot extend remotely while sitting on a boat.
Where to Go in Labuan Bajo
The immigration office (Kantor Imigrasi) in Labuan Bajo handles tourist visa extensions. It is located in town and is accustomed to dealing with tourists. Ask your hotel for the current address and opening hours — these can shift.
Office hours are generally Monday to Friday, 08:00–16:00, though processing times are faster in the morning. Bring everything you need in one visit.
What You Need to Bring
- Original passport (valid for at least 6 months)
- A completed extension application form (available at the office)
- A passport-size photograph
- Proof of accommodation (a hotel booking or confirmation)
- Proof of onward travel (a flight booking out of Indonesia)
- The extension fee: IDR 500,000 (approximately USD 35)
Payment is typically in cash. Bring extra rupiah in case additional fees apply.
When to Apply
Apply before your current visa expires, not on the day it expires. A reasonable window is 5–7 days before expiry. Applying too early (more than 2 weeks out) may not be accepted. Applying on the day your visa expires is a risk — if there is a delay or the office is closed, you are in overstay territory.
What Happens If You Overstay
Overstaying your Indonesian visa results in a fine of IDR 1,000,000 (about USD 62) per day. At immigration on departure, you must pay the full accumulated fine before you can board your flight. It adds up quickly. Plan your extension well ahead.
Alternatives to Extending
If a 60-day stay is not enough, other visa types exist — including the B211A Social/Cultural visa and various business visas — but these require more planning and are typically arranged before you arrive. For most travellers, the 60-day VOA extension covers everything.
