The Flores overland trip is one of the most memorable journeys in Indonesia. From Labuan Bajo on the west coast, you travel east through mountain villages, Manggarai highlands, Bajawa’s volcano country, the 17 Islands Marine Park at Riung, and finally up to the extraordinary crater lakes of Kelimutu near Ende. It is slow travel. It is worth it.
Who This Is For
Travellers with 5–10 days who want to go beyond Labuan Bajo and see the wider island of Flores. Also for anyone considering flying into Labuan Bajo and out of Maumere or Ende (a classic one-way trip approach).
Minimum Time Required
Five days is a tight minimum for the Labuan Bajo to Ende route. Seven to ten days is recommended if you want to explore each area rather than simply pass through. The roads are mountainous, distances are longer than they look on a map, and the best parts of this trip are the places you slow down in.
The Route: Key Stops
Ruteng (Day 1–2): About 3 hours east of Labuan Bajo. Known for the Spider Rice Fields (Lingko) — a traditional Manggarai land division system that creates concentric circles of rice paddy visible from hillside viewpoints. Liang Bua Cave (where Homo floresiensis remains were discovered) is nearby.
Wae Rebo Village (optional, add 2 days): A detour south from the main route to visit the famous cone-house village. Best as an overnight.
Bajawa (Day 2–3): A highland town surrounded by volcanic peaks. The main draws are the traditional villages of Bena and Tololela (both UNESCO-listed examples of Ngada culture), Avatar Hill viewpoint, and the hot springs at Soa.
Riung (Day 3–4): A small coastal town on Flores’s north coast, base for the 17 Islands Marine Park. Snorkelling, sea turtles, fruit bats at dusk, and a relaxed pace.
Ende (Day 4–5): The largest town in central Flores. The gateway to Kelimutu. Also historically significant as the town where Sukarno was exiled during the colonial period.
Moni and Kelimutu (Day 5+): The village of Moni sits at the foot of the volcano. From here, a short drive brings you to the Kelimutu parking area and a 20-minute walk to the viewpoints over the three crater lakes.
How to Do the Overland Trip
By private driver with a car: the most comfortable and flexible option. A driver who knows the roads, speaks some English, and can navigate village protocols is invaluable.
By public bus and bemo: cheap and authentic but extremely slow. Suitable for seriously experienced Southeast Asia independent travellers.
Flying In or Out of Ende or Maumere
A practical way to structure this trip: fly into Labuan Bajo, do the overland trip east, and fly home from Ende (ENE) or Maumere (MOF) airports. Both have regular connections to Bali and beyond. This avoids backtracking and makes the journey feel linear.
