Flores has a rich ceremonial and cultural calendar. Knowing when major events fall helps with planning, both to attend something worth attending and to avoid the unexpected accommodation crunch that festivals can bring.
Who This Is For
Travellers planning a Labuan Bajo visit who want to understand the local cultural and religious calendar, and whether any events may affect their plans.
Semana Santa (Holy Week, March or April)
Flores is one of the most Catholic islands in Indonesia, and Semana Santa, Holy Week in the lead-up to Easter, is observed with genuine intensity across the island. The epicentre is Larantuka in East Flores, where the processions are among the most extraordinary Catholic rituals in Southeast Asia. Pilgrims travel from across Indonesia and beyond.
In Labuan Bajo, the week is quieter but still observed. Many local businesses reduce hours around Good Friday and Easter Sunday. For travellers, Semana Santa is a chance to witness a deeply felt tradition that has few parallels in the region.
Komodo Festival (Usually July)
The Komodo Festival is an annual celebration in Labuan Bajo marking the region’s natural heritage and the national park. Events often include traditional dance performances, cultural exhibitions, food stalls, and activities around the harbour. The programme can vary from year to year, but it is worth catching if your dates line up.
Accommodation in Labuan Bajo can fill quickly during the festival, so it is worth booking ahead if your stay coincides with it.
Penti (Manggarai New Year, Usually November or December)
Penti is the Manggarai thanksgiving festival, celebrating the harvest and expressing gratitude to ancestors and the land. It is observed in traditional villages across the Manggarai region rather than as a public event in Labuan Bajo town itself. Visitors travelling through the region around this time may encounter preparations or celebrations depending on the specific community.
The date shifts according to the traditional Manggarai calendar, so it is worth asking locally if anything is happening during your trip.
Caci Performances
The Caci, the Manggarai ritual mock-battle performed with whips and shields, is staged for cultural events and important ceremonies throughout the year. The most accessible performances for visitors are sometimes held in Melo Village, about 20 km from Labuan Bajo. Scheduled performances also appear at selected hotels and cultural events.
Indonesian National Holidays
Several national holidays across the year can affect business hours, transport schedules, and accommodation availability in Labuan Bajo.
- Indonesian Independence Day, 17 August: a national celebration with events around the harbour. Some transport services reduce on the day.
- Nyepi (Balinese New Year, March): Bali-specific, but important if you are transiting through Bali, because flights do not operate for 24 hours.
- Lebaran / Eid al-Fitr: affects transport and staffing nationally. Travel should be booked early around this period.
- Christmas and New Year: Labuan Bajo fills with domestic and international travellers. Prices rise and availability tightens significantly.
