Labuan Bajo faces west over the national park islands, which makes it one of the best spots in Indonesia for sunset. There are several good vantage points in and around town, each suited to a different kind of evening. Here are the ones worth your time.
Who This Is For
Visitors who want to find the best view of Labuan Bajo and the park islands, whether for a sunset photo, a sundowner, or just a clear look at the landscape.
Puncak Waringin (The Town Viewpoint)
The most accessible elevated viewpoint in Labuan Bajo is Puncak Waringin, a hilltop about 10 to 15 minutes on foot from the main harbour area. The path is steep but short. From the top there is a clear 180-degree view over the harbour, the town, and the national park islands spread across the horizon.
This is the viewpoint most often used for quick photos during the day. It is free, open all hours, and requires no transport. A good morning spot for the light as well as a reliable sunset option.
Sylvia Hill
About 12 km from Labuan Bajo town, Sylvia Hill offers a higher vantage point and a more expansive view than the town viewpoints. A short walk from the car park reaches the summit. The outlook takes in the harbour, the surrounding hills of Flores, and the national park archipelago stretching to the horizon.
Getting here requires a scooter or private driver. The ride takes about 20 minutes on winding but paved roads. This is the viewpoint for people who want to be away from town when the sun goes down. Less crowded, quieter, and the photographs are noticeably better than from the harbour strip.
Paradise Bar Terrace
If you want a viewpoint with a cold drink attached, Paradise Bar sits on a hill above the harbour with one of the best outlooks in town. Tables fill up in the 30 minutes before sunset, so arrive early. The view is excellent and the bar staff are efficient. This is the social option, the right choice for a group sunset rather than a quiet one.
The Harbour Waterfront
The harbour road itself, particularly the stretch near the main wharf, is a perfectly good place to watch the sun go down. Free, easy to reach, and genuinely pleasant. Fishing boats move in and out, the islands turn gold and then dark, and the whole thing is unhurried.
From the Water
Some of the best sunset viewing in Labuan Bajo happens from a boat. The national park islands from water level at golden hour are different to any land-based viewpoint. Evening harbour cruises are available through tour operators at the harbour, typically around two hours with drinks, starting from about 17:00.
From Padar Island
If your Komodo day trip does not start with a sunrise hike, the Padar Island summit can be even better in the afternoon for photography. The light wraps around the western bays at sunset in a way sunrise does not replicate. Some operators offer afternoon Padar Island visits, though these are less common than sunrise departures.
