The Labuan Bajo harbour is the centre of everything. It is where boats leave for the national park, where restaurants cluster, where the night market sets up, and where much of the town’s daily rhythm plays out. Understanding the layout before you arrive saves time and avoids unnecessary confusion on your first day.
Who This Is For
First-time visitors to Labuan Bajo who want to understand the harbour layout before arriving, and how to move around it efficiently once they are there.
The Main Harbour Road
The main road running along the harbour is Jalan Soekarno Hatta. This is the spine of the tourist area. Most restaurants, tour operator offices, convenience stores, ATMs, and a large portion of the accommodation strip sit either on this road or just behind it. The promenade along the water is also the main walking area in the evenings.
The Boat Departure Area
Boat trips to Komodo National Park usually depart from the main wharf area at the south end of the harbour. Your operator will confirm the exact pickup point when you book. Most day trip departures are from the main jetty or nearby docks. For early departures, especially sunrise Padar trips, the dock area is quiet and crews are generally used to finding guests quickly.
The Ferry Terminal
ASDP inter-island ferries leave from a separate terminal at the northern end of the harbour. This is where ferries to Sumbawa and onward routes depart. It is about a 10 to 15 minute walk from the main tourist area, though a taxi or ojek is easier if you have luggage.
ATMs
BRI and Mandiri ATMs are located along the main harbour road, and BNI also has a presence in town. There is a BRI ATM inside Komodo Airport for withdrawals on arrival. Queues can build in busy periods, so it is often smarter to get cash earlier in the day rather than right before a boat trip.
The Night Market
The night market appears along the harbour road from around 18:00 each evening. It is easiest to find by following the smoke from the grills and the crowd. Grilled seafood and Indonesian dishes are cooked to order and it remains one of the best-value places to eat in town.
Tour Operator Offices
Most boat trip and tour operators have offices or booking desks along the main harbour road. Prices and tours are often posted outside, so comparison shopping is easy. If you prefer not to do that yourself, your hotel can usually point you toward more reliable operators.
Getting Around the Harbour Area
The harbour area is walkable. Most points of interest between the ferry terminal and the main restaurant strip are within 15 to 20 minutes on foot. The town rises steeply behind the harbour, though, so once you head uphill, ojeks become much more useful.
